GlobDEM50 - What is new in Version 2.0?

1. New raw data

Just like Version 1.2 our new Version 2.0 of the GlobDEM50 data is based on raw data of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission from the year 2000. However, in contrast to its predecessors Version 2.0 uses the latest SRTM-data (Version 2). It has been thoroughly revised by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA):
Coastlines have been edited and elevation data over water bodies homogenized. Single pixel errors of the old data version with unrealistic elevation values have been removed. Still even in the new SRTM-data some areas of missing data remain.

GlobDEM50 2.0 (left) features a new, more well structured layout than its predecessors.

2. New post-processing

We have significantly improved our post-processing of the SRTM-data for GlobDEM50. Especially our new procedures to remove voids in the raw data in many areas lead to remarkable results in the elevation data.

Three examples on the right visualize the positive effects of combining the new SRTM-database with our improved post-processing on GlobDEM50 elevation data.

Example GlobDEM50 Austria-Switzerland: The single pixel errors in a valley in the Alps that appear in the old version (left) vanish in the new version (right).
Example GlobDEM50 Germany: The unrealistic hills in the Rhine (Version 1.2 left) are no longer there in Version 2.0 (right).
Example GlobDEM50 Austria-Switzerland: Compared to Version 1.x (left) the post-processing of the SRTM raw data has been substantially improved for Version 2.0 (right).

3. New user interface

A new, well structured layout visually emphasizes the new database of Version 2.0. Furthermore, all the tools available for download on the metSoft homepage are included and the list of the availabe GlobDEM-data has been updated.
