Visualisation of synthetic wind roses in GoogleEarth !

If you have GoogleEarth on your computer you can now visualise synthetic wind roses against the background of the real landscape and a 3d display of the scenery! This creates unprecedented possibilities for the use of wind data:

  • Analysis of the spatial distibution of wind direction and speed (optional)
  • Estimation of the representativeness of measurements
  • Checking the spatial transferability of meteorological data
  • Qualitative assessments in climate issues
  • Rough qualitative assessments in olfactory issues
  • Selection of suitable locations for immission prognoses

We offer wind roses on a 500m grid in sections of 10km x 10km (i.e. 400 wind roses per section). They provide a convenient way of displaying wind direction and speed. The following add-ons are also available:

Add-on Wind Speed

Display of the yearly averaged wind speed 10m above the ground. Applications:

  • noise-connected examinations (LTU)
  • Examinations according to MLuS

Add-on Height

Wind distributions for various heights. Applications:

  • Examination of the effects of large-scale topography on the local wind distribution
  • Initial assessments for wind power stations (wind in hub height)

1. The area overview is where you can make out the area limits and get information on area names and order possibilities.

2. The preview offers a bird's eye view of the spatial distribution of the wind regime and gives a good first impression of topographical influences.

3. In the detail view you can find a high-definition display of the wind roses. Different colours indicate the frequencies of the wind speed categories. In this example the yearly averaged wind speed is also displayed in the center of each wind rose. This feature is available as an optional extra.

4. The 3d-view of the landscape in GoogleEarth together with the synthetic wind roses allows for an intuitive understanding of the effects that the relief has on the wind regime.

5. After the file "SynthetischeWindrosen.kmz" has been loaded you can find the entry "Synthetische Windrosen" in the directory structure in the left window of GoogleEarth. A list of all presently available areas (e.g. "Wiesbaden-Bad Kreuznach") with the corresponding 10kmx10km sections is displayed there. The wind roses can be purchased separately for each section.

6. For every wind rose file of a section (10km x 10km) loaded in GoogleEarth there is a list of optional extras that can be purchased in addition to the basic version. Not only do we offer the yearly averaged wind speed but we will also provide wind data for different heights on request.
